1998 Installation on Amagansett Dunes 70ft. from Ocean, Long Island, NY

My sculpture has its origins in a dream. I awoke in the middle of the night dreaming the words "The Caged Bird Dances" and wrote them down. The next day I was so inspired, I made a pencil drawing. I realized this work was a direct reflection of my personal life.

This theme has continued to grow in my sculpture. Several small studies, a motorized version and more drawings were created to develop the theme.

My first large version of The Caged Bird Dances, created for the exhibition in 1997 at the Michener Art Museum, was a chance to use the vocabulary of movement I was developing to express myself.

Wind accelerates the central form, a "twirl", as it rotates. Its rapid movement appears to dissolve the form into light as though absorbed by the air surrounding it. This discovery sparked the ongoing series and remains an important aspect of my work.

Today, it stands seasonally on the Amagansett Dunes of Long Island at the White Sands Resort.
